November in Gratitude
Being persistently thankful for the simple things in your life... there's real grace and quality in that. The pillow your head is lying on right now, the looming hangover, the new photos in your Camera Roll, the sun that is outside of your window... these are all gifts from life to you simply for being you.
How is a hangover a gift? The mere fact that you can feel it coupled with it’s reminder that your life is made up of your own choices is quite the recipe for more ambition and self-awareness.
Today, for example, I am personally grateful to have a choice. I can choose my food, my friends, my doctors, and my representatives (NOVEMBER IS HERE, VOTE). By way of that, I can't help but start to feel deep appreciation and awareness of my ancestors and all of the choices they didn't have. Gratitude makes us feel more gratitude.
So before we start listing any resolutions or start collecting photos for a Facebook and Instagram slideshow showcasing the good times in 2018, let's first start by priming with some micro-gratitude. No special equipment necessary:
Join me
Every day when you wake up, or before heading to sleep, write down 10 things you are grateful for that day. If you are running late, do it on the train. If you're too busy, do it on the toilet. No excuses. Do it.
With a friend
Pick a friend who would benefit from practicing gratitude and vow to text/email each other three things you are grateful for every day for the next 30 days. Make a game out of noticing new things you are grateful for each day. If you want to be my buddy, send me your gratitude list daily here.
The goal is to generate feelings of gratitude on command for a smoother ride on the rollercoaster that is life.
May this month bring you more things to be grateful for.
